Course Description:
 
This 40 hour course aims to give students an understanding of some key themes in environmental analysis and monitoring, with particular emphasis on methods of investigation. The course prerequisites include course work in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry and instrumental analysis, etc. By the end of course, students will gain advanced understanding of the application of key analytical methods on the common environmental analysis processes, such as the methods of electrochemical analysis, gas or liquid chromatography, mass spectrum analysis, as well as some advanced sample preprocessing methods of water, air, soil, solid waste, organism, etc. Monitoring methods about physical pollution such as noise, radiation, vibration and light pollution will be enclosed. The course will be a mixture of lecture, directed readings and classroom exercises that will cover environmental monitoring study design, measurement of pollutants and sample pretreatment. Exam will be taken at the end of course. Students will gain scores consist of the scores of their homework, a critical review and the final exam.
